Die Casting

Gravity Casting
Aluminum poured into a reusable steel mould under gravity alone. The slower fill traps less gas, so parts are dense and take T6 heat treatment well. More in the gravity casting guide.

Low Pressure Casting
Aluminum pushed up into the mould by low air pressure. The controlled fill gives pressure tight, fatigue resistant parts, which is why it is used for wheels and suspension arms.

Sand Casting
Bonded sand packed around a pattern to form a single-use mould. Tooling is cheap and there is almost no size limit, so it suits large parts and short runs. See the sand casting guide.

Investment Casting
A wax pattern is shelled in ceramic, melted out, then filled with metal. Crisp detail and smooth surfaces in stainless, steel, brass, bronze, and titanium, with far less machining afterwards.

Which custom casting process is cheapest?
It depends on volume. Under 100 parts, sand casting wins because patterns cost $500 to $5,000. Above 1,000 parts, die casting wins on per-piece cost even though the die costs $20,000 to $150,000+. See our metal part cost guide for full breakdowns.
How much does casting tooling cost?
Sand casting patterns run $500 to $5,000. Investment casting wax tooling runs $3,000 to $15,000. Gravity dies run $10,000 to $30,000. Die casting dies run $20,000 to $150,000+ depending on part size and cavity count.
How much does each cast part cost?
Small zinc die cast parts run $0.50 to $3 each. Mid-size aluminum runs $2 to $15 each. Sand cast steel parts run $20 to $200+ depending on weight. Investment cast stainless runs $5 to $50 each. Final price depends on alloy, size, and finishing.
What is the lead time for custom casting?
Sand casting runs 4 to 8 weeks. Gravity casting runs 4 to 10 weeks and low pressure 4 to 12 weeks. Investment casting runs 6 to 12 weeks. Die casting runs 6 to 14 weeks for tooling, then days per production batch. Quotes come back in under 24 hours.
What tolerances can custom casting hold?
Die casting holds NADCA standard 0.010 in. Gravity casting holds ISO 8062 CT7 to CT8, low pressure CT7 to CT9, and sand casting CT9 to CT10. Investment casting is quoted near net shape per ICI standards. Where a feature needs tighter than the process will hold, we machine it in house to 0.01 mm and verify on CMM to 0.002 mm.
Casting vs CNC machining: which is better?
Under 100 parts, or while the design is still changing, custom CNC machining is faster and cheaper. Above 1,000 identical parts, casting wins on cost and speed. We often combine both: cast the rough shape, then machine the critical features.
Casting vs metal injection molding (MIM): when to use which?
For small, complex steel or stainless parts under 100 g at volumes above 10,000, metal injection molding often beats investment casting on per-piece cost. Casting wins for larger parts, lower volumes, and alloys MIM cannot process well, including most aluminum, magnesium, and large steel parts. See what metal injection molding is.
Can you cast titanium?
Yes, through investment casting. Titanium is not suitable for die casting because of its melting point, but our investment casting line runs titanium for aerospace and medical parts. Tell us the grade your drawing calls for and we will confirm it at quote.
Do you handle machining and finishing after casting?
Yes. Every cast part can flow into CNC machining, heat treatment, anodizing, powder coating, plating, painting, and mechanical assembly. One supplier, one purchase order.
What certifications does Meco hold?
