What Is Custom Injection Molding?

Custom injection molding means building a mold shaped like your part, then pushing melted plastic into it to make the same part again and again. You pay for one tool, then get thousands or millions of matching parts.

What We Check in Your Design
Most molding problems are designed in, not made in. These are the first things our engineers look at when your file arrives, and the fixes that save the most money.

Custom Injection Molding FAQs
What is custom injection molding?
Custom injection molding is making plastic parts from a mold built for your design only. Melted plastic is injected into the mold under pressure, cooled, and ejected as a finished part. One mold then produces thousands or millions of identical parts, which is why the cost per part drops sharply as volume rises.
How much does an injection mold cost?
An aluminum test mold runs $2,000 to $8,000. A soft steel mold for medium volumes runs $8,000 to $25,000. A hard steel production mold runs $20,000 to $80,000 or more. Price tracks part size, number of cavities, and features like slides and lifters. Hard steel molds run over a million shots.
How much does each molded part cost?
Small parts in commodity resins such as PP and ABS run 10 cents to $1 each. Larger or more complex parts in PC or Nylon run 50 cents to $5. Engineering resins such as PEEK or glass-filled grades run $3 to $30 or more. Volume is the biggest lever, since the tool cost spreads across every part.
How long does injection molding take?
Aluminum tooling takes 2 to 3 weeks and steel tooling takes 4 to 8 weeks. After you approve first samples, production parts ship in days to weeks depending on quantity. Your quote and DFM feedback come back in under 24 hours.
What tolerance can injection molding hold?
Our standard is 0.05 mm on molded features. Tighter tolerances are achievable on key features through cavity design, gate placement, and cooling control, and we call these out during DFM. More detail in our plastic injection molding guide.
Can you do overmolding and two-shot molding?
Yes. We support insert molding, where metal parts are molded into the plastic, and two-shot molding, where two resins bond into one part, such as soft TPU on a hard PC body. Learn more in our 2K molding guide.
What is your minimum order quantity?
There is no MOQ. With aluminum tooling, 100 to 500 parts works well for pilot builds and market tests. Injection molding usually beats other processes on cost from roughly 1,000 to 5,000 parts a year. Below that, 3D printing is often the better call and we will tell you so.
What certifications and protections do you have?
Meco is IATF 16949:2016 certified, the automotive quality standard, which is built on all ISO 9001:2015 requirements. We run APQP, PPAP, SPC, and PFMEA, and supply REACH and RoHS documentation. Your design stays yours: we provide IP protection and sign NDAs before work starts. Production is in Thailand and China, managed from Canada. More about Meco.
