CNC Bending FAQ

What is CNC bending?

CNC bending is a manufacturing process that uses computer-controlled press brakes to form sheet metal into specific 3D shapes. By controlling the backgauge and ram depth with high precision, we can achieve tight angular tolerances and complex geometries that manual folding cannot match.

What materials can be CNC bent?

We work with a wide range of ductile metals. Common materials include Aluminum (5052, 6061), Stainless Steel (304, 316), Carbon Steel, Copper, and Brass. Harder alloys may require larger bend radii to prevent cracking.

What is the minimum bend radius?

As a general rule, the minimum inside bend radius should be equal to the material thickness (1:1 ratio) to avoid stress fractures. However, with specialized tooling and specific ductile materials, tighter radii are possible. Our DFM team will review your specific requirements.

How do you handle "springback"?

Springback occurs when metal tries to return to its original shape after bending. Our CNC press brakes calculate the material's tensile strength and automatically "over-bend" the part by a few degrees so that when it relaxes, it settles at the exact required angle.

Can I place holes near a bend line?

Holes placed too close to a bend line will distort (become oval) during forming. We recommend keeping holes at a distance of at least 2.5x the material thickness from the bend line. If closer placement is needed, we may machine the holes after bending.
