What is TIG welding (GTAW)?
TIG (Tungsten Inert Gas) welding uses a non-consumable tungsten electrode to produce the weld. It offers the highest level of control and precision, resulting in clean, high-quality welds often used in aerospace, medical, and automotive industries.
When should I choose TIG over MIG?
Choose TIG when aesthetics and precision are paramount, or when welding thin-gauge materials. While MIG is faster for thick structural steel, TIG is superior for complex joints, non-ferrous metals, and applications where no post-weld grinding is desired.
What metals can be TIG welded?
TIG is the most versatile process for exotic metals. It excels with Stainless Steel, Aluminum, Titanium, Magnesium, and Copper alloys. It is rarely used for cast iron but is the standard for non-ferrous precision work.
Does TIG welding require filler metal?
Not always. TIG allows for "autogenous" welds (fusion of the base metals only) if the fit-up is tight. However, for most joints requiring structural strength or gap filling, a filler rod is manually added by the operator.
Why is cleaning critical for TIG?
